Geek in Residence

Australia Council for the Arts Geek in Residence Program

The Geek in Residence program supports organisations funded by the Arts Organisations Division to develop their digital skills in various areas throughout their organisation.

About the Geek in Residence Initiative

Funding is for up to $25,000 towards paying for a geek’s salary. The salary must be matched by the host organisation (all other project related costs should be covered by the host).

The objective of the program is to equip arts organisations with the skills, information and connections needed to be competitive in the digital era.

Organisations can apply for funding to employ a “geek” (a technology enthusiast or expert) for a period of up to 12 months. Successful hosts will receive up to $25,000 towards paying for the geek’s temporary placement. The host is responsible for recruiting and employing the geek.

Proposals are encouraged from organisations who want to create a cultural shift across any area of their organisation. Projects that the geek could get involved in are:

  • Completing a technology audit and developing strategic technology plans for the organisation.
  • Exploring innovative use of technology when creating new work.
  • Exploring ideas and projects to realise the potential of a next generation broadband network.
  • Finding new and innovative ways to use technology to deliver arts to a wider audience.
  • Exploring strategies for the use of mobile and location-based technology, including games to extend the creative experience.
  • Exploring the use of digital technologies to improve how organisations are run.
  • Running training sessions and workshop with staff to develop technical skills.
