Warmun Art Centre is one of Australia’s leading Indigenous cultural organisations. Located in Gija Country, in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, Warmun Art Aboriginal Corporation (Warmun Art Centre) is wholly Gija owned and governed with a board comprised of artists and leaders from Warmun community.
Warmun Art Centre (WAC) represents internationally renowned contemporary artists Lena Nyadbi, Mabel Juli, Rusty Peters, Rammey Ramsey, Patrick Mung Mung, Churchill Cann, Shirley Purdie and many others. It also promotes the careers of a large number of younger and emerging artists. These artists follow in the tradition of creating high quality ochre paintings established by the founding Turkey Creek painters; Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, George Mung Mung, Jack Britten, Paddy Jaminji, Hector Jandany, Henry Wambin and Mick Jawalji.
In addition to the successful painting studio and gallery programs, we have established a number of interconnected cultural operations; a digital media centre, Gija language and cultural programs, a digital media archive and a growing exhibition touring program. Warmun Art Centre also works in partnership with Melbourne University to develop ‘two-way’ learning programs aimed at supporting the transmission of cultural knowledge to younger generations of Gija people, and students and teachers from the university.
We are currently looking for a Gallery Coordinator to join our team. The position is for a two-year contract with options to extend. The role of Gallery Coordinator carries many challenges and also offers great rewards. What we are looking for
The Gallery Coordinator plays a key role in the running of the organisation, being responsible for the financial management in areas of the Centre’s art gallery and its associated programs, including touring exhibitions, publications, merchandising, copyright, financial record-keeping and Gija staff training.
Although the position of Gallery Coordinator will largely be based in the gallery, cross over into other program areas may be required from time to time. In this regard, as part of a talented and flexible team, it is desirable that applicants also have some experience of Indigenous culture and cultural programs and experience with social media.
As a minimum you should possess the following skills and attributes:
- Knowledge of or strong interest in Aboriginal culture and/or art practice
- Retail sales experience within a successful commercial gallery, retail operation or similar
- Marketing, philanthropic fundraising and grant writing skills
- Ability and desire to live in a remote community
- Excellent cross-cultural communication skills, a high degree of adaptability and the resilience and ability to work with a close knit team
- The ability to multi-task, prioritise and work well under pressure as well as be flexible within your role, especially the capacity to fill in for other staff who may be absent from their positions from time to time
- Strong administration and communication skills
- A tertiary qualification in arts management, curatorial practice, business management or similar
Proficiency in one or more of the following:
- Knowledge of contemporary and/or Indigenous art practice
- Experience in the day to day operations of a large artists studio, travelling exhibitions and cultural programs
- Experience in social media platforms and communications
- Experience in grant writing and funding acquittal processes
- Experience working in the not-for-profit sector and/or philanthropic fundraising
Applicants who have previous experience working in Aboriginal communities will be highly regarded, though this is not an essential requirement of the position. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team that will help shape the next chapter in Warmun Art Centre’s story whilst working closely with and supporting the careers of some of Australia’s leading contemporary Aboriginal artists at local, national and international levels.
The salary package is inclusive of;
- Salary range of $48,000 – $55,000 depending on experience
- furnished air conditioned accommodation and electricity
- five weeks annual leave

- 5% superannuation
